How to Grow Various Types of Berry Bushes in the Garden

Various kinds of berry bushes are available online and also in the local nurseries, which can be planted and grown at home. House owners need to know all about the type of soil and climatic conditions needed for the healthy growth of each type of berry. Some of these bushes can also be used for ornamental purposes while some bushes are planted only for harvesting their delicious fruits.

Factors for growing berry bushes at home

Sunlight – Most of the varieties of berry bushes need direct sunlight for at least 6 – 8 hours of the day, for the healthy growth of sweet berries. However, raspberries need much lesser sunlight for producing large numbers of fruits. Hence, most of the berry bushes should be planted in the center of a garden, away from all shades.

Soil quality – The soil should contain all the necessary nutrients that a berry shrub needs for growing steadily and healthily. So it is better to add a large amount of compost and fertilizers to the soil, before planting these bushes. Moreover, the compost should be added at least once a year, to maintain the desired richness of the soil. All the weeds and other unwanted plants should be cleared out from the patch of land where berries should be cultivated. The soil should be thoroughly drained with water, to supply sufficient moisture for the growth of these bushes.

Space between two bushes – Since berry bushes are perennial, most of these bushes can be planted quite close to each other. Only these plants should be given some space to allow their roots and branches to spread as they grow gradually. Hence, a large hole should be dug for planting a berry bush, to allow free growth of the plant. Some of these bushes need runners for spreading out over the ground, for which short plants or dead canes should be placed close to the hole dug for planting these shrubs.
