Backyard Berry Garden

Popular Berry Bushes Used for Landscaping of Backyards

It is a common practice of people to plant various shrubs and trees in their home gardens. They want to grow various kinds of edible fruits and vegetables in their backyards. Berry bushes are popular choices for many house owners, as berries are favorite fruits of most young and old. Moreover, these bushes of short height can be used as edging plants along the fences guarding the premises. Different kinds of berries are available in the market, which people want to plant in their gardens.

Blueberry bush – Two varieties of blueberries are available, which can be identified by the height of bushes where these dark blue fruits grow. The taller bush does not exceed the height of 6 feet and can be grown in pots as well. It is marked by the blooming of small, cup-shaped white flowers in the spring season, which turn bright red by the time the fall season starts. On the other hand, the shorter blueberry bush has a height of only 18 inches and it needs the help of a runner plant for spreading all over the garden. So some homeowners use it to cover the ground instead of grass, mainly in arid areas.

Strawberry – Strawberry is a popular variety among all berries, which is adored for its sweet taste and wonderful aromatic flavor. This red-colored fruit grows on a short bush, which spreads very fast all over the ground. There are different species of strawberry, one of which bears fruit only in June while another species yields ripe berries throughout the year. People need to take good care of these berries and also need to protect the fruits from birds. Hence, some homeowners prefer to grow strawberries in pots, which they can place securely in their balconies.

Elderberry bush – The elderberry shrub is quite large and attains a height of up to 20 feet. However, this tall bush is pruned occasionally to increase its beauty in a home garden. It remains packed with white star-shaped flowers that later turn into dark purple-colored berries of glossy skin. The green leaves turn yellow, orange or red during the fall season, making this bush prettier. People use these sweet elderberries for making jam, jelly, and pies. Moreover, this fruit is also commercially used for manufacturing wine, just like grapes.

There are more varieties of berry bushes that can be used for making the landscape greener at a home, including the raspberries, blackberries, and gooseberries, for fortifying the edges of a garden.
